Complete the text. Use the Past Simple or Past Continuous form of the verb in brackets.

A. Tom (have) a ten-minute break from his boring office job, when he (see) an interesting advertisement in a magazine. Some people (plan) to sail around the world. They (look) for another member of the crew for their boat. Tom (sigh) and (look) around his office. Everyone (type) letters and the phones (ring), just as they (do) every day. He (think) about the advertisement for a long time. He knew that he (not / want) to spend his whole life working in a job like this one. He (still / think) about the advertisement when the boss (come) along and (give) him lots more boring work to do. "Right, he (decide), I'm definitely going to answer that advert. Sailing around the world would be much more interesting than this!"

B. The sun (shine) and the birds (sing) as Mike (drive) down the country lane. He (smile) because he (look forward) to the journey ahead. Mike (enjoy) driving, especially when he (go) somewhere new. Then, suddenly, the engine (begin) to make a strange noise and the car (stop) dead in the middle of the road. Mike (try) to start it, but nothing (happen). He (sigh), then (get out) of the car. As he (push) the car to the side of the road, Mike (start) to wish he had stayed at home.

C. John (enter) his flat and (close) the door. He (hang up) his coat when he (hear) a strange noise. A tap (run) in the kitchen. He (walk) into the kitchen and (turn) it off. Then he (freeze). Someone (stand) behind him. He (take) a deep breath and (turn) around. His flatmate, Steve, (lean) in the doorway. "You (give) me a fright!" John exclaimed. Steve (laugh) at him. John (start) to laugh, too. "I (think) you had gone to London today", he said. "No", (reply) Steve. "Unfortunately, I have missed the train".

D. When I (wake up), I found the sun (shine) and the temperature (rise) fast. Liz (make) breakfast in the kitchen, while John and Sarah (drink) coffee on the balcony.
