Past Progressive употребл€етс€:

1. дл€ выражени€ незаконченного, длительного действи€, происходившего в какой-то момент или период в прошлом (обозначени€ времени at six oТclock, at noon, at midnight, at that moment, during, from 5 till 7 oТclock yesterday, the whole day, all day long, all the time, still).

At 10.00 I was having a bath.

2. дл€ выражени€ двух длительных действий, которые происходили одновременно в течение одинакового промежутка времени.

While he was speaking to the teacher I was waiting for him.

ƒлительное действие в определенный момент может быть прервано одиночным действием в прошлом, выраженным Past Simple

John arrived w hen I was cooking supper.

3. Past Progressive от глагола to go (I was going) в сочетании с инфинитивом употребл€етс€ дл€ выражени€ имевшего в прошлом намерени€ совершить действие. ¬ этом случае имеет значение собиралс€, намеревалс€.

I was going to tell him about it, but he interrupted me.

Exercise 1. Say what you or other people were doing some time ago.

e.g. - The whole day yesterday I was busy. (write an article)


1. On Sunday I was in the library. (prepare for one's exam)

2. At 11 a.m. on Saturday I was at the University. (write a test)

3. We were in the country on the weekend. (fish)

Exercise 2. Put the verbs in brackets into Past Progressive. Make them negative.

1. She (cry) when I saw her.

2. At 8 oТclock on Tuesday evening the students of our group (have) a meeting.

3. They (go) to the recreation room to dance.

4. They (revise) for their preliminary in English.

5. We (have) a test at 2 p.m. yesterday.
