Alex and his family

Let me introduce Alex, a first-year cadet of the Navigation Department of the Murmansk State Technical University. Alex is 18. He is very pleasant in manner and appearance, polite and helpful, as you can judge for yourself. Alex is just a nice chap. I think, he surpasses others in some ways. First, thoughhe is not at the top of the group with his studies, he knows what he is after. Second, though he is not a great sportsman, Alex keeps fitby doing physical exercises regularly. Third, he gets along with his parents all right; it is not very common these days. His parents live in a 3-room flat in Murmansk. It's a 5-minute drive from the city centre. Alex has also got a teenage sister called Natasha. Alex's father works for the H.Bank. He is always early for work and he often stays late there. Almost every day he's rushed off his feet, that's why he sometimes looks exhaustedafter work and takes a short rest when he gets home. Alex's father likes to have his supper on a tray and to watch a lovely programme on the telly. When it is time for the football match or the news, he turns the TV up. By the way, he is a keen supporter of "Spartak". He never loses interest in football, even if they play badly. He hasn't got a particular hobby because there isn't much free time, but there is always enough on his plateas it is. However it's untrue to say that he doesn't give a hand to his wife with the housework. He can make her a nice cup of tea if she is tired or annoyed. "It's probably only a storm in a tea-cup", he thinks. She must cope on her ownwhen her husband trotts all over the place, works overtime and whatnot. Poor mother. As a matter of fact, he makes a reasonable amountof money. Alex's mother used to be a doctor at a local hospital. She used to look after a great number of patients. She's a housewife now and she still works hard. In fact she's a marvellous cook. Alex's mother certainly knows how to do that. To tell the truth everybody enjoys her meals. Besides, she hunts around the shops for high quality food. It's unbelievable how she manages to look smart. When she puts her best outfit on, she looks terrific! You know Alex's mother is fond of TV quiz programmes. I'm sure she can go in for one of these quizzes one day. Her only disadvantage is that she spends money like water. Alex's sister still goes to school. She is 17 and she will leave it soon. She is as good as gold, really. Natasha helps her mother quite a lot. She peels potatoes, lays the table, doesa spot ofwashing up,feeds the cat, tidies the flat and lends some money to the impoverished cadet, her brother. The only thing I can't stand is the sort of music she often listens to. Such rubbish! But tastes differ. As you can understand, they are very different, but they are a family. pleasant [΄pleznt] appearance [ə΄pıər(ə)ns] polite [pə΄laıt] helpful judge [΄dLd] just chap [tòæp] surpass [sə:΄pa:s] though [ðou] be after great sportsman keep fit common drive teenage sister - almost[΄ :lmoust] rush off one's feet exhausted [ıg΄zo:stıd] tray lovely [΄lLvlı] , telly by the way keen supporter [sə΄po:tə] lose interest particular [pə΄tıkjulə] enough [ı΄nLf ] on one's plate however untrue [΄Ln΄tru:] give a hand annoyed [ə΄noıd] probably It's a storm in a tea-cup. . cope on one's own trot all over the place work overtime whatnot reasonable amount [΄ri:znəbl ə΄maunt] used to be marvellous [΄ma:vıləs] truth hunt smart [sma:t] outfit () terrific quiz [kwız] disadvantage [ֽdısəd΄va:ntıd] spend money like water peel lay the table a spot of feed tidy [΄taıdı] lend impoverished [ım΄pov(ə)rıòt] stand rubbish [΄rLbıò] taste [teıst]
