Unit 4. Recreation. Movies. TV. Music

Text 1. The Use of Leisure

By the way people use their leisure their character can be told more surely than by the way they work. For most people work is necessity in order to earn a living. Many people did not have an opportunity to choose their job. But in their spare time they do what they really like and their real selves are reflected in their actions. Some people are completely passive during their leisure hours. If they go out, they prefer watching other people doing things. Others hurry home full of eagerness to begin on some scheme they plan for their leisure. This is the creative type of character. Their hobby can be carpentry or gardening, or studying something which they are interested in.

Leisure should be refreshment. It should send a person out with fresh spirits to battle with the problems of life. Sometimes this freshness comes not from doing anything but by filling one' mind with springs of beauty. In this case a person can contemplate nature, listen to music and on the whole make their own mind richer and fuller.

Comprehension and discussion

Why can a person`s character be told by the way they use their leisure?

What types of people are there according to the way they relax?

What do active and passive people do in their spare time?

Are you passive or active at leisure?

Text 2. Music

Music is art of combining sounds that have rhythm, harmony and melody. It is an integral part of our life. Music can relax, treat and cure, inspire, provoke our deepest emotions and fill our hearts with kindness, joy and happiness.

During the Middle Ages singers (minstrels, bards) wandered from town to town singing songs of love and heroic deeds. First musicians used very primitive instruments: whistles, pipes, drums. Then mandolins, bagpipes, flutes, horns appeared.

Nowadays modern musicians have various instruments: violins, pianos, guitars. Orchestras, the first groups of professional performers, appeared in the 18th century. They consisted of 20 musicians. There are different kinds of orchestras: symphony, chamber, string orchestras, brass bands and others. Different people like different types of compositions. Some people are fond of classical music (sonatas, operas). Others are interested in pop music and choose modern trends: rock, hard rock, electronic music and so on. Many people listen to their favorite recordings at home and go to concerts or gigs. You can hardly find a person who does not like or need music. It is beauty in sounds, our magic source of inspiration.
