Text 2. Eating Out

This week we decided to go to a small family-run restaurant in the suburbs of London. The Peace and Quiet" is newly opened and overlooks the Thames. We heard several favorable comments about it. We booked early and managed to get a nice table with a view of the quay. We were made very welcome and the service was excellent. The proprietor, John Bull, runs the kitchen by himself and his wife, Alice, showed us to the table.

The choice of the items on the menu was extensive but rather traditional. We started with appetizers which were fresh and well served. For my main course I chose beef filet medium which was the specialty of the day. It was perfect because the chef chose good meat and it was cooked just long enough. I like it so much that I asked for a second helping. My partner ordered mutton chops and they were a little underdone. The vegetables we also ordered came in small portions and were rather overcooked. The bread was fresh because it was baked on the premises. The fruit salad was a delight to see. It must be very time-consuming to cook. The wine list was good and we drank house wine, which was reasonably priced. The bill came to 40 £, although the service was not included and we left some tips.
