Tuneless Music by Trey Gunn

please see English version below: Причиной, по которой я решил написать эту статью, стал анализ статистики посещений сайта Результатов за несколько месяцев прошлого 2004 года, а также за январь 2005-го. В графе Top 20 of 85 Total Search Strings в первых строчках постоянно фигурировало имя Trey Gunn, например в январе, он находился на втором месте после King Crimson. Поэтому то я и задумался – почему? Что такого особенного находят в нём? И что именно ищут в Сети? Ведь, в принципе, у Трея Ганна есть свой персональный сайт в сети (www.treygunn.com), где должно быть абсолютно всё интересующее размещено.

Сходил я туда и сразу же обнаружилось, что сайт не обновлялся с 2001 года, к тому же там есть определенного рода неточности, например в разделе Дискография указаны какие-то три непонятных альбома, которых идентифицировать не удалось, года выпуска там не указаны вообще, а больше записи с такими названиями нигде не находились. Ну и так далее. Так что на самом деле может быть понятно, что нужно в Сети по поводу Трея Ганна. - "Food for Thought and (Other Vicious Circles)" Trey Gunn- Subliminal Records - "Playing with Borrowed Time" Trey Gunn - Subliminal Records - "The Magic If" with Trey Gunn - Subliminal Records Ну хорошо, задумался я дальше – а что именно ТАК интересует народ в Трее Ганне, что такого хорошего есть в его музыке, чем он может быть потенциально интересен народу? Послушал имеющиеся в наличии записи, что-то взял у знакомых, что-то нашел у себя. Давно уже не слушал эти диски, да и не очень-то они мне нравились на самом деле. Поэтому освежить впечатления было просто необходимо. 1. "One Thousand Years" Trey Gunn - Discipline Records, DGM9302, 1994 2. "The Third Star" Trey Gunn - Discipline Records, DGM 9606, 1996 3. "Raw Power: first of the Surfacings Series" Trey Gunn - First World, FWD99.01, 1999 4. "The Joy of Molybdenum" Trey Gunn - Discipline Records, DGM0001, 2000 5. "Live Encounter" Trey Gunn – First World 0113, 2001 6. "Untune The Sky" – Inside Out, IOMCD 145, 2003 И вот какие ощущения конкретизировались: – музыка Ганна достаточно однообразна. Очень трудно отличить одну композицию от другой. Создаётся такое впечатление, что это одна бесконечная композиция с изменением ритма и темпа; – она лишена ярко выраженной мелодичности. Ритм превалирует над остальными элементами; – достаточно четко прослушивается подражательность этой музыки музыке Фриппа и King Crimson; – иногда это всё разбавляется элементами World Music - скажем, Tony Geballe подыгрывает на сузе или Bob Muller на табле; – всё это звучит достаточно холодно - и даже отдельные соло на Warr Guitar звучат как ослабленный Фрипп; – абстрактные мультимедийные образы очень примитивны и очень однообразны - от этих картинок утомляешься... Так что в целом - я бы сказал, вычислить, что это именно музыка Трея Ганна довольно сложно - она безлика и подражательна. В моей перепалке с Негодяем www.musicmind.narod.ru по этому поводу он вообще высказался вот так - "Это музыка для басистов, барабанщиков и чуваков, считающих что они разбираются в прогрессиве." Кстати говоря, почему на большинстве сайтов Интернете это называется «прогрессивом»? Честно говоря – я уже перестал понимать, что такое «прогрессив», а музыка Ганна мне, действительно, не нравится... Но никак не подберу слова, чтобы точно это сказать большому числу людей. С одной стороны, «прогрессив» – это вроде как бы движение вперед. Но, ведь движение зависит от системы отсчета. И одни считают, что вот так – это вперёд, а другие – считают, что это назад, третьи – по кругу. Первые называются – позитивистами. Вторые – консерваторами. Третьи – Ницше, Шпенглер, Екклесиаст - пессимистами... Вот если реально, в глаза высказать эти шесть тезисов, но как? И главное – зачем? И вообще, я думаю, для артиста его возраста – это уже много. Ведь в чём тогда сила этой музыки? Что позитивного? Что своего, а не переигранного с приёмов Фриппа? Человек выпустил 6 альбомов и хоть одна запоминающаяся вещь есть?? Я могу понять, когда он играл в Кримзн и параллельно на DGM выходили его альбомы - ну, нравилось Фриппу клонировать себя – ну и хрен с ним... А сейчас Ганн и Мендельсон что это такое? Мне кажется, что это местечковые дела всё – клубная музыка..., для подвыпивших фэнов... Вот задай себе вопрос – ЧТО ТАКОЕ МУЗЫКА ГАННА? И ответь... Не КАКОВА ЕГО ТЕХНИКА и ЭЛЕКТРОНИКА, А ЧТО ЗА МУЗЫКА? Или Ты хочешь поальбомную раскладку? Это тоже можно сделать, но тезис-то простой – ГОРА (Фрипп) РОДИЛА МЫШЬ... Я не прав? Правда, последние абзацы, это уже не мои мысли, а наша полемика со Свеном в переписке по е-мэйле. Но сути вопросов это не меняет, со Свеном я согласен. Надеюсь, что размещение этого материала на сайте Результатов вызовет какую-нибудь реакцию и начнется полемика, которая поможет проявить истину? Besides, there are some inaccuracies – e. g., the Discography section lists three strange albums I couldn`t identify, and shows no year of release. And a few other things. I browsed my own records, borrowed some from friends and gave them a listen. It`s been a long time since I had listened to them last – not that I particularly like them – so I had to refresh them in my memory. 1. "Untune The Sky" – Inside Out, IOMCD 145, 2003 And here are my feelings after I listened to these records: - Trey Gunn`s music is very monotonous. It is difficult to tell one piece from another. It`s like listening to a single endless piece with changing rhythm and tempo; - his music is not expressly melodic. Rhythm prevails over anything else; - it clearly imitates Fripp and King Crimson; - sometimes it is mixed with elements of World Music – say, Tony Geballe accompanying the saz or Bob Muller playing the tabla; - it all sounds quite cold – even the individual Warr Guitar soloes sound like Fripp light; - the abstract multimedia images are very primitive and monotonous – make you sleepy… So, in general, I would say that it is pretty difficult to figure out that this particular piece was written by Trey Gunn – it is very dull and unoriginal. In our discussion with Negodiay www.musicmind.narod.ru, he actually said, `This music is for bassists, drum players and those who think they dig progressive music.` And while we`re at it – why do most of the web sites refer to this kind of music as `progressive`? Frankly speaking, I don`t even understand any longer what `progressive` is – and I don`t like Gunn`s music… Somehow, I just don`t have the right words to explain what I mean to a large audience. On one hand, `progressive` means `moving forward`. But then again, doesn`t it all depend on the frame of reference? Some think it`s moving forward, there are others who think of it as falling back, yet others think it`s going in circles. The first group is called `positivists`. The second group – `conservators`. The third one – Nietzsche, Schpengler, Ecclesiast – `pessimists`… Now, if only I could tell Gunn, eye to eye, about the six things that I listed earlier – but how? And, more important, why? Besides, I just think it would saying be a bit too much to an artist of his age and his credentials. What is there about this music that make people like it? What`s positive about it? Is there anything original, anything that wasn`t simply copied off Fripp? The guy released 6 albums – is there a single piece that sticks to memory? I could understand it when he played with Crimson and released solo albums on the side – I mean, OK, Fripp liked cloning himself, screw it… But now, Gunn and Mendelson – what is it? I think it`s just club music for drunken fans… OK, now, ask yourself – WHAT IS GUNN`S MUSIC? Now try to answer… Not WHAT IS HIS TECHNIQUE, not WHAT IS HIS ELECTRONICS, but WHAT IS THIS MUSIC ABOUT? You want to break it down by albums? OK, that can be done, but at the end of the day, it`s all about a very simple thing – THE MOUNTAIN HAS BROUGHT FORTH A MOUSE… Am I right or am I right? The last paragraphs are, actually, from our email polemics with Sven, but that doesn`t change anything, I agree with him. I hope that when placed of the Rezultaty web site, this article will evoke some reaction and there will be some polemics that will hopefully help reveal the truth.
