Sunflower performance tests (2) were conducted in 2011 by the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station (3) to provide farmers, extension workers (4), and private industry with unbiased agronomic information (5) on many of the sunflower hybrids marketed in the state (6). Tests were financed in part by entry fees (7) from private companies. Companies known to be developing and marketing sunflowers were invited to participate and enter hybrids on a voluntary fee-entry basis (8). As a result, not all hybrids grown in the state were included in tests, and hybrids were not grown uniformly (9) at all locations. The test locations in 2011 included Thomas County - on fallow; Thomas and Greeley Counties irrigated (11); and Harvey County - dryland, continuous crop (12). Dryland tests (13) in Ellis and Greeley Counties were abandoned (14) due to severe weather conditions. Oilseed entries (15) were grown at all locations. Confectionary entries (16) were evaluated in Thomas and Greeley counties. Oilseed and confectionary entries were planted separately in all tests. Entries were planted in four-row, replicated plots (17) at all locations. To ensure uniform and adequate stands (18), all tests except those in Thomas County were planted at a high seeding rate (19) and were hand thinned (20) after emergence(21) to desired stands.
