William Glasser: there are only two places in the world where time takes precedence over the job to be done: school and prison.

Will Rogers: there is nothing so stupid as the educated man if you get him off the thing he was educated in.

Heinrich Heine: if the Romans had been obliged to learn Latin, they would never have found time to conquer the world.

Mark Twain: in the first place god made idiots; that was for practice; then he made school boards.

Obama Defends Record on 'The Daily Show'

President Obama took his campaign message to The Daily Show Wednesday night, marking the first time a sitting president has appeared on the late-night comedy program, and the first time the show in its entirety has featured a single guest. Laughs were in short supply as Obama defended his administration's record, but Stewart had a few amusing lines. Some highlights:

Referring to Obama's frequent refrain during the presidential campaign that "we are the ones we've been waiting for," Stewart said, "So here you are, you're two years into your administration and the question that arises in my mind: Are we the people we were waiting for or does it turn out those people are still out there and we don't have their number?"

Referring to the promises Obama made in 2008, Stewart said, "You ran on a very high rhetoric of hope and change. And the Democrats this year seem to be running on, 'Please baby, one more chance.' How do we go in two years from hope and change to this?"

When Obama said he wanted to say something about members of Congress, Stewart prompted laughter by asking, "Are you going to curse?"

When Obama said, "We have done things that some folks don't even know about," Stewart quipped, "Oh? Are you planning a surprise party for us?"

When Obama said that his top economic adviser, Lawrence Summers, who is leaving the administration at the end of the year, "did a heck of a job," Stewart said, "You don't want to use that phrase, dude." Stewart was referring to when former President Bush said FEMA Director Michael Brown was doing a "heck of a job" managing the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
