Інфінітив в англійській мові – це неособова форма дієслова. Інфінітив є першою формою дієслова і саме в цій формі кожне дієслово подане у словнику. Відмітною ознакою цієї форми дієслова є наявність частки to (to teach – вчити, to treat – лікувати).

Без цієї частки інфінітив використовується після модальних дієслів (крім ought to); дієслів shall/will; дієслів чуттєвого сприйняття (feel – відчувати; see – бачити; hear – чути і т. п.); дієслів let – дозволяти; have – мати; make – змушувати; після виразів had better – краще; would rather – краще б.
