It's 11 o'clock in the morning. Helen Sokolova is in one of the biggest department stores in the city. Many things are bought and sold here every day. Though it's still early, there are a lot of customers near the counters: some are buying things, others are just looking around.

Helen: Excuse me. How do I get to the shoe-department?

Shop-assistant: It's over there the right, please.

(In the shoe-department).

Helen: I'd like to try on a pair of boots, please.

Shop- assistant: What size do you take in boots?

Helen: 34, and I want very warm boots, too. It's very cold in the street.

Shop assistant: Oh, yes, it's terribly cold. Thirty four... You have very small feet. Will you try this pair on? How do you feel?

Helen: I think they are a size too big. Perhaps you can find a different pair.

Shop assistant: Just a moment. You are lucky ( ). Here's a lovely pair, but it's more expensive.

Helen: Oh, it suits me perfectly well. How much is it?

Shop assistant: 70 dollars.

Helen: Where do I pay?

Shop assistant: Over there at the cash-desk.

Helen: Thank you for your help.

Shop assistant: You are welcome.

Then Helen buys some dark-brown gloves to match her new boots and looks at her watch. She sees it is rather late ( ), so she leaves the store and goes home.

Shops and shopping

When we want to buy something we must go to the shop where it is sold. In the shop-window we see what is sold in the shop.

Sugar, tea, coffee, salt, ham, bacon, macaroni and so on are sold at the grocer's. Bread is sold at the baker's, meat at the butcher's. We go to the greengrocer's for vegetables and to the fruiterer's for fruit.

When we want to buy clothes, we go to the men's and boys' or ladies' and girls1 outfitter's. We buy boots and shoes at the boot and shoe shop. We buy jewellry and silver and gold watches at the jeweller's. We buy books at the bookseller's.

The salesman and salesgirl stand behind the counter. The cashier sits at the cashdesk. The customers go up to the counter. The salesman or salesgirl weighs the goods which we want to buy on the scales and tells the price. At the cashdesk we give the bill and the money to the cashier, who gives us a check and our change. The salesman wraps up the goods and gives them to us. We put them in our shopping bags.

Some shops have many departments. We can buy nearly everything we need there. These are called department stores. In some shops there are no salesmen, but only cashiers. The customers choose the goods they want and pay at the cashdesk. These are called selfservice shops. We pay with money - banknotes and coins.
