Sex, gender and personal differences in understanding of moral dilemma

V. V. Znakov

Dr. sci. (psychology), professor, Deputy Director of IR RAS, Moscow

There are presented the results of theoretical and empirical research of sex, gender and personal differences in understanding of Kohlberg's moral dilemma. First part of research revealed high internal consistency of the Bern Sex Role Inventory scales (Russian adaptation) (277 Ss). In the second part of research (410 Ss) there were shown that mean rate of feminine indices are greater significantly in women (213 Ss) then in men (197 Ss) but masculine indices didn't differ significantly. Masculinity was statistically founded to be mainly (but not exceptionally) male characteristic and femininity - female one. Third part of research (212 Ss) proved the hypotheses partially. There weren't shown any quantitative difference in replies to dilemma questions but the great variety of types of moral dilemma understanding was found. Man and women, masculine and feminine subjects, people with low and high machiavellism rate as well as with low and high self-esteemate of moral personal traits do explain the reasons of formally the same replies absolutely differently.

Key words: understanding, situation, moral dilemma, sex, gender, masculinity, femininity, machiavellism.
