4.11. Quiz: Is Biology Right for You?

Most biologists possess the same sort of skills and aptitudes and enjoy certain procedures that draw them to the field. To get an indication as to whether you have similar likes, aptitudes and interests and if you'd be happy with a career as a biologist, just take the following quiz. Make a note of how many times you answer "Yes" to the following questions.

I like studying living things like animals or plants, and the world around them to increase the knowledge and understanding of areas such as the environment, genetics, and animal or plant biology.

I would acquire my skills in agriculture to improve productivity in livestock or crops.

I enjoy tackling environmental issues such as ways of cleaning polluted rivers so that fish can thrive.

I would master my skills in conservation supporting a variety of plants and animals in their natural environment.

I would master and reinforce my skills in medicine developing new methods to diagnose, monitor and treat illness or disease.

I would master and use my skills in industry preventing food contamination or creating ways to dispose of waste safely.

I would include designing and carrying out experiments, making observations, writing reports and publishing scientific papers based on my research.

I would feel comfortable working in a team with other scientists and technicians.

I realise that my work requires regular working hours - usually from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday - with occasional evening and weekend shifts.

Depending on my specialist area of work, I could be based in a laboratory, a classroom, in industry or on a research vessel at sea. Fieldwork can sometimes take place in challenging conditions.

I am interested in the natural world and enjoy practical science.

I have an enquiring mind and good problem solving skills.

I work accurately and pay close attention to detail.

14. I’m interested in mastering excellent spoken and written communication skills.

I would attribute importance to understanding of statistics and relevant computer packages.

I find it satisfying to know that I keep up to date with new developments in my specialist area and contribute to research and advances in my field.

I enjoy seeing the results of my work and dedication to a project or assignment.

18. I would like to have a relevant degree and a master’s qualification that will allow me to choose from a variety of career paths and areas of expertise.

I would like a career that has a competitive salary and many opportunities for advancement.

I would like a career that offers security and stability, even in times of economic hardship.

If you answered "Yes" to fifteen or more of the questions, the profession a biologist might be a great career choice for you. If you answered "No" to more than six questions try to understand what a career as a biologist really means, you may have some different answers to questions on this quiz and you might want to take it again.

4.12. Make a presentation: «My future profession». Use the following questions to help you:

1. What is your special subject?

2. What is your future job?

3. What professional/personal qualities you should have to be a good biologist and why?

4. What spheres of biology you may work at, what are your duties?

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your job?

6. What are the promotion prospects?
