ACTIVITY B

- Read the text attentively!

1/ You dont have any kids? How come? Ive been asked that question many times. My answer is always the same: its because I feel over population is the most urgent problem to be faced now and in the future. Many of the worlds ills such as crime, poverty and pollution are linked to the unchecked growth of the human species.

2/ The harmful psychological effects of overpopulation were made clear to me in a biology class about rats reproduction. The number of rats multiplied but they remained in the original cage. As their number increased, they started to exhibit anti-social behaviour. The result of overcrowding is the same with humans. The less space people have to live in, the harder it is for them to get on well with each other. As people compete, not only for space but also for food, water and air. Crime, and lack of respect for other people, become more common because personal space is reduced.

3/ Over population also leads to poverty, disease and famine as people desperately compete for jobs, food and shelter, especially in the big cities. I was amazed to read about an Indonesian father who was unable to feed his nine children as he was really poor. I felt he should have known how he was going to feed nine children before he got his wife pregnant nine times.

4/ Over population also contributed to the pollution of our environment. Also, global warming seems to be linked to pollution of the air. Because a great number of people must use their cars to go to their jobs, traffic jam, together with noise and a great amount of pollution are the consequences. Thats why fewer people would mean less pollution from cars, factories, planes and trains.

5/ Over population leads to most problems facing us today. We can all help by limiting our own family size, encouraging young people to do the same and voting for laws to encourage zero population growth. A brighter future will be our reward.
