Exercise 82. Listen to the text about a sea turtle and complete the text.

Speaker [ Br.E]

A sea turtle

The first sea turtle lived on Earth 150 million years ago. Nowadays, there are 300 types of turtles in the world. The biggest one is the Leatherback Turtle. It is two metres long, and its weight is about 600 kg. Turtles have hard shells made of 59 to 61 bones. These shells are part of their skeleton, so turtles can never leave them.

Scientists believe the sea turtle can live for one year without eating any food. The sea turtle lives up to 80 years. The sea turtles food is crabs and jellyfish. It is the jellyfishs number one enemy!

Some sea turtles migrate thousands of miles on regular routes to nesting spots, much like birds. These world travellers return every two or three years to the same beach to lay their eggs.

Exercise 85. Listen and read the poem.

Speaker [ Br.E]

An octopus woke up one day,
And noticed something straight away.
One leg had vanished, out of sight,
It must have disappeared last night!

The octopus was in distress,
Without eight legs my lifes a mess!
Walkings going to be so tough,
Seven legs is NOT ENOUGH!'

So he phoned up the dolphin Kate,
And told his problem to his classmate.
He knew his friend would help him out,
Thats what friends do, he had no doubt.

Three minutes later, Kate was there,
Holding something with great care.
She gave a smile and softly said,
Dear Octopus, I found your leg.'

All my friends like the summer holidays best, but I believe that the winter holidays are the best. They are incredible, arent they? Lots of celebrations, lots of greeting cards and lots of fun. Its a magical time when families get together, have special meals, enjoy presents and nicely decorated trees. Im sure both children and grown-ups enjoy this holiday best.

Yesterday, we had a wonderful day. We went to the centre of town to support my mum, who took part in an unusual race. The rules were quite strict: to run as fast as possible with a frying pan in your hand. Its not easy, is it? My mum didnt win the race, but she wasnt upset. We enjoyed the funny race and the party after it.

I like this autumn celebration. I think its only celebrated in Britain. At the beginning of November there are several evenings of colourful fireworks all over the country. We usually go to the country with my uncles family and have a nice party. We make a big fire, cook special food like sausages and jacket potatoes and, of course, set off fireworks.

Its a very busy celebration for me, really. My little brother just draws a picture of flowers, but I have to clean the house, help my father to prepare a special dinner and then put all the dishes into the dishwasher. I usually get very tired in the evening. But Mum is happy to have a rest and get flowers and chocolates, and Im happy to please her.

Hi, Tom. What are you doing here?

Speaker 2 [A boy of 12;Br.E], Tom

Oh, Linda! Pleased to see you here. Whats that? Have you bought a new computer game?

Speaker 1 [A girl of 12;Br.E], Linda

Yes. Its a present for Sam. Dont you remember? Hes going to have a birthday party on Saturday. Were both going to be there, arent we?

Speaker 2 [A boy of 12;Br.E], Tom

Yes. But I havent chosen a present for Sam yet. What game have you bought for him?

Speaker 1 [A girl of 12;Br.E], Linda

Travelling under water: lots of incredible adventures, friendships with a dolphin and a blue whale, a fight with ugly sharks and funny stories from an octopus.

Speaker 2 [A boy of 12;Br.E], Tom

Sounds really interesting. Do you think that Sam is fond of the underwater world?

Speaker 1 [A girl of 12;Br.E], Linda

Yes, I do. Hes going to be a marine biologist. He has got a big aquarium which is full of colourful fish.

Speaker 2 [A boy of 12;Br.E], Tom

Really? Wow! Ive got an idea. I could buy a nice little turtle or an interesting book about Jacques Yves Cousteaus adventures with colourful photos in it. I have just seen a book like that upstairs.

Speaker 1 [A girl of 12;Br.E], Linda

I dont think a turtle is a good idea. Keeping a pet is a great responsibility. Youd have to speak to Sam first. Lets leave that idea for next year. I think the book is perfect.

Speaker 2 [A boy of 12;Br.E], Tom

All right. Lets go to the bookshop upstairs. Ill buy the present and then we can go to the cinema. Theres a new adventure film about a contemporary Robinson Crusoe. Have you seen it?

Speaker 1 [A girl of 12;Br.E], Linda

Not yet.
