Exercise 5. A life of regrets. Betty Arnold won nearly 10 million pounds. Complete her regrets.

Winning the lottery was the worst thing that ever happened to me. I wish I (win). I gave my husband 5 million pounds and he ran away with my best friend. I wish (give) him any money. The police can’t find them. If only they (find) them. My children have changed. They are always asking me for money, and they won’t do their school work. I wish they (do) it. Exercise 6. Find and correct the mistakes in the following text.

Losing your memory

Imagine it that one day you woke up and discovered that you had completely lost your memory. How would you have feel exactly? I have thought about this recently after I was involved in a traffic accident. I woke up in hospital, and said to myself: “It’s the time I got up and have went to school!” I soon realised my mistake. A nurse came in and asked to me what my name was. I thought about it for a moment and then said, “I would wish I knew!” Then I tried to get up. “I’d rather prefer you didn’t do that,” said the nurse. “Don’t worry you’ll have it your memory back soon.” “I wish you hadn’t have said that,” I replied. “Now I am really worried! If I hadn’t looked in my wallet, I wouldn’t have been known my own name!” Unfortunately my memory soon came back, and I realised I had a maths test the next day!

 

EMPHATIC CONSTRUCTIONS

(ЭМФАТИЧЕСКИЕ СТРУКТУРЫ)

       Эмфатической структурой называют такую синтаксическую конструкцию, которая служит для выделения того или иного члена предложения.

1. Усилительное do(does, did)

Усилительно do употребляется в утвердительных и повелительных предложениях в сочетании с инфинитивом смыслового глагола, причем сохраняется прямой порядок слов. При переводе сказуемого перед смысловым глаголом добавляются слова действительно, фактически, на самом деле, все же.

Model:

The above law does hold.

Вышеупомянутый закон действительно справедлив.

Примечание. Если в предложении есть еще наречие со значением действительно, например actually, really, indeed, то do не переводится.

Exercise 1. Translate into Russian.

1. These molecules are too small to be seen, even with the microscope, but strong experimental evidence seems to show that they do exist. 2. The formation of ozone during the electrolysis of water does not change the weight of the gas collected at the positive pole but it does decrease the volume. 3. We were discussing so far what happens to a body when forces do not act on it. Let us now consider what happens when forces do act on it. 4. The suggestion made in the first edition does seem to have justified itself in practice.
