Watching television and visiting or entertaining friends or relatives are among the most popular leisure activities in Britain. Nearly every household has a television set and about 82 percent of households have a video recorder. People spend, on average during the week, 25 hours watching television and over 16 hours listening to the radio. Listening to recorded music, increasingly on compact disc (CD), is also popular, and 59 percent of households have a CD player. Other regular pastimes include reading, gardening, do-it-yourself home improvements, sporting activities, and going out for a meal, to a pub or bar, or to the cinema.

There are over 2500 museums and galleries open to the public in Britain, which have some of the worlds most important and exciting collections. They receive about 110 million visitors a year. The most famous of them include the British Museum, National Gallery, and Natural History Museum etc. The British Library has over 150 million individual items, including books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, stamps and recorded sound.

Britains artistic and cultural heritage is one of the richest in the world. Around 650 professional arts festivals take place in Britain every year. London is one of the leading centres for drama, music, opera and dance. Britains symphony orchestras are internationally famous, the British pop and rock music maintains its worldwide appeal. British films are acclaimed. There are about 2200 cinema screens in Britain.

As to the young people, the most popular pastime for teenagers is watching television; one in three British teenagers has a television in their bedroom. They spend 12 hours per week this way, compared with only 6 hours doing their homework. The alternative is playing computer games or musical instruments.
