THINK OF THE FUTURE!
The population of the world is growing very fast. In the last 40 years it has doubled. Our cities will be much bigger. There will be more factories and more roads. We will need more water and more natural resources. Experts say that we must change the way we use energy and natural resources now. A typical family in Europe or America throws away more than 1 ton of rubbish each year but we can recycle most of this. If we recycle things, we can save money, energy and natural resources. Recycling the New York Times newspaper, for example, will save 75,000 trees every week. |
A lot of the rubbish that we throw away is not biodegradable. Plastic, metals and chemicals will not disappear for hundreds of years. Pollution will be a very big problem in the future. We must avoid using non-biodegradable materials. We must also reduce the amount of unnecessary things that we produce and use. In shops, for example, we can say “No, thanks” to the packaging that comes with the things we buy. Many natural resources are not renewable. Coal, gas, oil, metal and mineral will finish one day. We also have to find alternative ways to make energy. We can use the sun, the wind, the sea and the heat of the Earth. |
In common with many countries, Britain has serious environmental problems. In 1952, more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog. The government introduced new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and the situation improved a lot. Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from gas. |
Part of the problem is the new “out of town” shopping centres. In the past people often walked to shops near their homes or went by bus. Now, many people drive to the new shopping centres. As a result, the small shops have disappeared and more people have to travel to do the shopping. Critics say that Britain needs better and cheaper public transport. Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London can cost about 100 pounds (about 150 US dollars). |
Many people are trying to reduce the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to reduce the pollution and cost. |
