THE ICEMAN FRoM THE AlPS

The preserved remains of a 4,000yearold mountain climber re

veal new facts about the early Bronze Age.

By Jonathan Mitchell

Try and picture the scene many thousands of years ago. A young man dressed in a thick leather coat and carrying a wooden rucksack went off climbing in the Alps in Austria. He took with him a knife, a bow and an axe. At around 3,200 meters, something happened to him. Either he had an accident or somebody hit him. Whatever hap pened, he died and lay buried and forgotten in the Similaun Glacier.

He was eventually discovered 4,000 years later by some German climbers who found him by chance at the edge of the glacier. His body, which is remarkably wellpreserved, is said to be the oldest human specimen from the early Bronze Age.

LISTENING. 11th form 19

A study of the mummified body reveals that the man was between

20 and 40 years of age, about 160 cm in height, and had tattoos on his chest. The condition of his teeth suggests that he had a diet of meat and flour. He had clearly been wellprepared for his Alpine trip with his weatherproof jacket and leather boots lined with hay to keep out the cold.

What was the reason for his mountain trip? Was he a hunter? This seems unlikely, since most wild animals lived in the forests lower down the mountain. Was he perhaps searching for gold? or could he have been escaping from an enemy? Some think he may have been a ho ly man, searching for a quiet place to pray. or he might simply have been on a trip to visit a friend in a neighboring valley. Whatever he was doing, it was a disastrous expedition for him but fortunate for scientists four thousand years later.
