UNIT NINE. Same oir Special

Text study

The Graeae (pronounced "grey eye") Theatre Company is unique in Britain because it is the only professional theatre company of actors with disabilities. Disabled people are exactly the same as people without disabilities. Sometimes they can be even more talented than other people.

The company was founded as an amateur group in 1980, by Nabil Shabin and his college lecturer, Richard Tomlinson. Nabil always wanted to become an actor but discovered that no British drama school would accept a disabled student. He even got a place at the British Drama League, but they turned him down once his disability was mentioned. So Nabil began to write plays as a way into the world of theatre, and went to Hereward College of Further Education where he met Richard. They started to put on comedy revues at the college, with Nabil and others acting and Richard directing. This gave Nabil and other disabled actors a rare chance to perform on stage. They talked about setting up a disabled theatre group, but Richard and Nabil each had further studies to pursue in different places.

The big opportunity came in 1980 when Richard was invited to take a theatre group to a conference on Disabilities in Winnipeg. Nabil quickly got together with small group of actors, borrowed money from friends for the air fare to Canada and performed Sideshow, based on one of the early revues. This made fun of the way able-bodied people often treat people with disabilities.

The name Graeae comes from the Greek myth about three grey sisters who live together because they have to share only one eye and one tooth between them. They are left helpless when the God Perseus, son of Zeus and Danae, steals their eye.

Nabil said, We chose a classical name because like us the Greeks were pioneers in the theatre. Perseus managed to take advantage of the strangely-looking sisters because they were dependent on the only eye/People with disabilities can be exploited like this too.

Now the company has eight members: five actors, a director, an administrator and a stage manager. People take Graeae seriously enough to go and see them because of the high standard of their performances,, not just out of curiosity to find out what sticks and wheelchairs look like on stage.
