The third conditional
We use the third conditional to talk about possible events in the past that didnt happen. To form third conditional sentences, we use if+ past perfect + would have + past participle: If wed set out earlier, we would have arrived on time. (= We didnt set out early and we didnt arrive on time.) If youd told me about the party, I would have come. (= You didnt tell me about the party and I didnt come.)
We can also use could have or might have: If Id known you were in town, I could have met you. If shed worked harder, she might have passed her exam.
We use the past perfect (not would have) in the //clause: If youd invited me, would have come. (Not If you would have invited me, I would have come.)
