My University
The Donetsk State Technical University is a young institution of higher education. It became the University in 1993. Before that time it was the Polytechnical Institute. It was founded in 1921.
The University trains specialists of various professions. There are 10 faculties in it. For those who want to combine work and study there are extra-mural departments. After graduating from the University the students have an opportunity to work at various enterprises or research institutes.
There is also a Preparatory Department at the University. All necessary faculties are provided for students.
The University is housed in 10 academic buildings, situated in the center of the city. The University is run by the Rector and 3 Pro-Rectors. At the head of each faculty is a Dean of a faculty. He has an assistant a vice Dean.
The student body is about 1700 students. Many laboratories, libraries are provided for them.
There are scientific centers for students. Students are engaged in research under the guidance of professors and teachers. The students of the University can go in for any sport they like: light athletics, swimming, table-tennis, basketball, handball and football.
In 1996 the University teaching staff and students celebrated its 75th anniversary.
About myself, my family, my working day
Let me introduce myself. I am a girl. My name is Lena. My full name is Popova Elena Vladimirovna. I was born in 1999 in a family of a mining engineer and a doctor. I am 18. I finished secondary school and entered the Academy. At present Im a first year student of extra mural department. I was doing well at school and my parents were proud of me. They expect me to become a good specialist.
My family isnt large: my father, my mother and my little brother, just a typical family. My father is fifty, he works as a mining engineer. My mother is forty-five, she is a doctor. My brother studies at school, he is only ten. When he was a baby, I looked after him. His name is Nick.
My grandparents are retired. They dont live with us. But we meet very often. They like gardening and spend time in the open air growing different vegetables and fruit. We are very friendly and helpful.
My working day begins at 7 oclock, when I get up, have my breakfast and go to the Academy. As my house isnt far from the center of the town I go to the Academy on foot. But when I am late I take a bus. Our lectures begin at 8 oclock and end at 4 p.m.
After lectures I am tired and when I return home I have dinner and have a rest. Later on I prepare my homework, help my mother if she needs my help and go for a walk. When the weather is fine, I like to walk in the streets or parks. In the evening our family gets together in the living room to watch a movie on TV. Sometimes I read books, listen to music or just talk with my parents.
My city (Donetsk)
Donetsk is my native city where I live. It is the center of Donbass. My city is over a century. It sprang up in 1859 near the metallurgical plant. At that time it was called Yusovka after the English capitalist J.Huse.

Before the revolution it was a little settlement with dirty streets and single storied houses.
Now Donetsk is a big industrial center, good planned and very beautiful. It is called a city of roses. Its population is over one million.
There are more than 200 industrial enterprises in Donetsk. Coal is the main source of its economy. The miners, metallurgists, builders, workers of light and food industries work in the close contact with scientists. There are more than 20 scientific, research and designing institutes of Donetsk.
The Donetsk State University, the Donetsk State Technical University, Medical Academy and some other higher schools train specialists for economy.
Donetsk has a lot of cultural establishments too. Everybody knows the Drama and Opera Theatres; the Philarmonic Society, the Picture Gallery and museums, the Public Library named after Krupskaya.
There are 3 large stadiums and some places of sport in our city. Not only republic but also some international competitions are held in our city.
The citizens of Donetsk do all their best to make the city more beautiful.
