Now we are in the South-West of our city. It is a comparatively new part of Moscow. The first building site was laid here in 1952. More than half the area is under parks, gardens, boulevards and alleys. The area is called Luzhniki.
We are entering a new highway which is called the Third Transport Ring. Here it is necessary to say a few words about the scheme of Moscow. Historically, Moscow was built according to a radial-ring scheme. The Third Transport Ring is one of the five transport rings of Moscow and the newest one. A lot of other new roads have been built in Moscow recently. Thus the city authorities are trying to solve the major problem of Moscow – too busy traffic.
Now we are turning right and driving along the Metro-bridge from which you can see Moscow's main sport complex, located on the bank of the Moskva-river. The sitting capacity of all the structures of the “Luzhniki” sport complex is 115 thousand visitors. The territory is more than 153 hectares. The main building is the Big Arena – the stadium which is under reconstruction at the moment. The reconstruction will have been completed by 2018, when Moscow and some other Russian cities will host the Football World Cup Final. The opening, closing ceremonies and the opening and final matches will take place in this stadium. There is also a Small Sport Arena, a Sport Palace, a swimming-pool, a skating-rink, several football grounds, tennis-courts, track-and-field areas etc. It is also necessary to mention that all solemn events of the 22nd Olympic Games of 1980 took place in the “Luzhniki” sport complex. It was Moscow that for the first time in the history of the Games arranged colourful opening and closing shows of the 22nd Olympics.
We’re driving into one of the highest areas of the city called the Sparrow Hills. In the
distance you can see the spire of the main building of the State Moscow University on the Sparrow Hills. There are 7 sky-scrapers of this type in Moscow. They are located in the most important points of the city and can be seen from afar. They were built by a special decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 1947 and have largely determined the post-war image of Moscow.
