The Alexander Gardens were laid out in the 18th century and perhaps it is one of the most beautiful parks of Moscow. As you pass under the trees you are actually walking where the Neglinnaya river once flowed. Around 1820 Tsar Alexander the First ordered to put it into a tube and that is where it is today. The monument to Alexander the First has recently been erected in the Alexander Gardens which bear the name of this Russian Emperor.
At the entrance to the Alexander Gardens there is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Memorial. Here one of the defenders of Moscow who was killed during World War II was buried in 1967. The epitaph on the Memorial says, “Your name is unknown, your feat is immortal”. The Eternal Fire flames in a bronze star. A two-men guard of honour changes every hour.
Next to the Tomb you can see a line of granite stones each bearing the name of the Hero city of our country, among them Leningrad, Kursk, Smolensk, Stalingrad and others, the citizens of which displayed heroism during the 2nd World War.
At the foot of the Kremlin wall you can see the grotto in the shape of ruins. This architectural motif was in great fashion in the middle of the 19th century, when the ruins of Pompeii were excavated. (Pompeii is one of the towns that was buried in the volcano eruption of 79 A. D.)
Not far from the Kremlin wall rises an obelisk, which was designed in 1913 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the House of the Romanovs. After the October Revolution of 1917 the names of the world known thinkers and revolutionaries were written on it, among them Marx, Engels, Campanella, Plekhanov, Saint-Simon and many others.
