Косвенное дополнение ( Indirect Object )

В данной функции герундий употребляется после многих глаголов, прилагательных и причастий, требующих определенных предлогов:

to account for – объяснять	to be tired of – устать от чего-либо
to aim at – стремиться к	to depend on – полагаться на; зависеть от
to accuse of – обвинять в	to object to – возражать
to be fond of – любить	to prevent from – мешать
to be interested in – интересоваться	to result from – являться результатом
to be responsible for – быть ответственным за	to result in – приводить к
to be afraid of – бояться	to succeed in – удаваться
to be busy in – быть занятым чем-либо	to look forward to – ждать с нетерпением
to be capable of – быть способным на	to apologise for – извинять за
to be engaged in – заниматься чем - либо	to think about / of – думать о
to be good at – быть способным к	to dream of – мечтать о
to be keen on – увлекаться чем-либо	to decide against – принимать решение против
to be proud of – гордиться	to be used to = to be accustomed to – привыкать, иметь привычку

В функции косвенного дополнения герундий употребляется с предлогом in после некоторых существительных: satisfaction, harm, difficulty, sense.

Models:

There is no harm indoing that.	Нет ничего плохого в том, чтобы сделать это.
There is no sense ingoing there today.	Нет смыслаидти туда сегодня.

Exercise 1. Translate into Russian.

1. He likes treating most complicated problems. 2. She avoided expressing her opinion in public. 3. He hated being disturbed during the experiment. 4. Lots of people prefer discussing observations, problems together. 5. We remember having obtained these data in the previous experiments. 6. We can’t help remembering that this reaction is often followed by an explosion. 7. He was proud of changing the experimental conditions. 8. They were used to taking part in such experiments. 9. Small blue-green algae prevent mineral salts from being washed out by rain. 10. Students were busy in planting new trees in the park. 11. Everyone was engaged in watering young plants with this solution. 12. He did not get used to making some simplifications. 13. Using large amounts of water resulted in germinating. 14. Intensive growth of grass resulted from prevailing in our region favourable temperature conditions. 15. They apologized to the teacher for not having done this work in time.

6. Определение (Attribute)

Герундий в данной функции употребляется после следующих абстрактных существительных с предлогами:

- art of, opportunity of, idea of, way of, chance of, importance of, intention of, fear of, right of, process of, possibility of, method of, means of, habit of, hope of, necessity of, pleasure of, problem of,

- surprise at, disappointment at, astonishment at,

- apology for, plan for, reason for, preparation for,

- experience in, interest in, skill in,

- objection to.

Exercise 1. Translate the following sentences into Russian.

1. There is some reason for believing that the truth lies somewhere between these two extremes. 2. The doctrine opened wide opportunities for increasing the yields. 3.
