There are several public holidays in the United States of America. The idea of success is important to Americans. They believe that if they work hard they can have what they want and be what they want. This is a part of what they call “the American Dream”.
Perhaps this is why American are so hard-working. They do not take many vacations. There are only 5 national holiday that are celebrated in every state. These are New Year’s day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day. On these days, government offices and banks are closed.
There are other important public holidays, but they are not celebrated everywhere. Seven state do not celebrate Columbus Day. And some special holidays are not public holidays at all.
New Year’s day - January 1. On that day families and friends meet for a meal, make promises for the next year, whatch Macy’s Day Parade in New York and football games on TV.
M.L.King’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January. Martin Luther King was an very important black leader who wanted equal rights for black people. He was murdered in 1968, Because of his work, Congress made his birthday a public holiday in 1986.
Washington’s Birthday is celebrated on the third Monday in February. George Washington was the first President of the USA. He was also a brave soldier and a very honest man. On this day students read about him and business display flags.
The Flag day (June 14th). “The Stars and Stripes” was first celebrated in 1877 on the Flags hundred birthday. Many people display a flag on this day, but it is not a major holiday and business stay open
Remembrance Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May. Independence Day is celebrated on July 4. On this day in 1776, the U.S. declared its Independence from England. It was the beginning of a new nation There are parades, games, sports with prizes, picnics and firework in every town and city. Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September by labor union parades. It is a day of rest for the workers. Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Many people display a flag to honer who discovered 1492 the country.
Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11. There are memorial services, special dinners and speaches to remember all the people who fought in the wars – the living the wall as dead.
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In 1621 William Bradford, the Governor of Massachusetts, decided to have a thanksgiving dinner for all the people. He wanted to thank God for many things. The meal lasted 3 days. Today the turkey is usually eaten by the family.
Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December as a birthday of Jesus Christus – our God.
