Columbia
Columbia is the state capital and largest city in the State of South Carolina. The name "Columbia" was a poetic term for the Americas derived from Christopher Columbus. Columbia is the primary city of the Midlands region of South Carolina, which comprises several counties in the central portion of the state. The city lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda and the Broad, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River.
Columbia has a diversified economy, with the major employers in the area. Major manufacturers such Westinghouse Electric, Harsco Track Tech, Trane, Intertape Polymer Group and others have their factories in the Columbia area.
Columbia is home to the main campus of the University of South Carolina, which was chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College and in 1906 as the University of South Carolina. The university has 350-degree programs and enrolls more than 27,500 students throughout 15-degree-granting colleges and schools.
It is also a cultural centre which has The Columbia Museum of Art, The South Carolina State Museum, The South Carolina State Library, The Columbia Choral Society, Columbia Marionette Theatre, The South Carolina Shakespeare Company and so on.
