The Chemistry Department of the Bashkir State University was founded on the basis of the Bashkir Pedagogical Institute in July 1957, when the Department of Geography was turned into the Department of Chemistry and Geography. On February, 13 in 1963 the independent Department of Chemistry was formed. The first Dean was Master of Chemical Science S.M. Petrov.
Chemistry is the main subject at the Department of Chemistry. It deals with substances, their properties and changes which the substances undergo. Chemistry is a very broad subject area it has over 30 branches, or fields: analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, colloidal, electrochemistry, etc. chemistry is one of the fundamental sciences, it plays an important part in the development of biochemistry, physics, geology and many other sciences. Practically the future of chemistry is umlimited.
The Chemistry Department of the BSU provides excellent facilities for academic studies, practical and research work. Teaching is done through lectures, seminars, practical classes, personal consultations and colloquiums. The Department has staff who cover all chemical disciplines. Many Doctors and Masters of Science are working at the Department at present.
The Department has good laboratory facilities, some of which have been recently modernized. Students work a lot in well-equipped laboratories to gain direct practical experience in modern chemistry under the supervision of skilled analysts and scientific advisors.
The Department of Chemistry provides a spectrum of specialties. Specialization begins in the third year in five branches of chemistry: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and chemical technology, higher molecular chemistry. All the equipment in the laboratories is available for student use while they work at their course and diploma papers.
Some students go on to research at postgraduate course after graduating from the University if they want to become research workers. Others prefer to work at chemical plants or in laboratories.
