Роль контекста при переводе

Известно, что большинство слов в языке является многозначным, и установить, в каком именно из всех возможных значений слово употреблено в данном случае, можно только из контекста. На всех стадиях перевода слова в тексте решающее значение имеет анализ контекста.

Контекстом является та наименьшая часть текста, которая и делает слово однозначным. Иногда для этого достаточно всего лишь одного соседнего слова, а иногда значение слова можно осмыслить только после прочтения всего текста. Принято различать узкий контекст (словосочетание или предложение) и широкий контекст (абзац, глава, а иногда и весь текст целиком). В большинстве случаев значение слова достаточно точно вскрывается уже из узкого контекста.

Например, слово «окно» может означать и окно дома, и просвет в облаках, и отсутствие урока в расписании занятий, и отверстие в детали и т.д. Но в предложении «Письменный стол стоял у окна» понятно, что речь идет об окне дома. Английское слово «title» может означать – заглавие, титул, звание, и на что-либо. Но в предложении «His title is Professor» слово «title» уже однозначно. Иногда контекст бывает настолько выразительным, что позволяет легко догадаться о значении не известного переводчику слова.

Обозначим в нижеследующих предложениях пропущенные слова черточкой (___), и каждый легко догадается об их значении:

Он рассердился и, хлопнув ___, выбежал из комнаты.

Сверкнула молния, раздался ___, и первые крупные ____ упали на землю.

Точно так же можно догадаться по контексту о значении пропущенных слов в английском предложении:

The cold wind very quickly caused a ____ in temperature.

В широком смысле, контекстом являются и знания переводчика в той области, к которой относится переводимый им материал, так как они помогают ему правильно определить значение слов, позволяют судить, употребляются ли данные термины в этой области, приняты ли у специалистов подобные выражения, говорят ли так?

Контекст играет очень важную роль в переводческой деятельности. И дело не только в том, что он помогает подобрать необходимый эквивалент, определить семантику переводимого слова, уточнить оттенок значения той или иной единицы, но и в том, что он позволяет переводчику в полной мере использовать его языковую интуицию. Языковая интуиция – ожидание какого-либо слова, словосочетания, конструкции в определенном контексте (например, ожидание конструкций Complex Object после глаголов see, hear, smell и т.д.) – незаменима в сложных ситуациях, когда переводчик испытывает затруднения, потому что именно такое чутье содействует правильному переводу.

Известно, что многие английские слова односложные и в зависимости от места в предложении могут выполнять любую синтаксическую функцию, следовательно, могут переводиться по-разному. Поэтому именно контекст, т.е. ближайшее окружение единицы, вызывающей переводческие трудности, активизирует языковую интуицию переводчика и помогает ему найти оптимальный эквивалент.

 

 

Упражнения

Упражнение 1: Определите, какое значение приобретают выделенные слова в контексте следующих предложений. Переведите предложения.

 

Post

1. The soldier is now at his post. 2. The man did his best to get a better post. 3. I will send you the book by post. 4. The wooden gate was supported by two metal posts.

Power

1. The chameleon has the power of changing its colour. 2. I will do everything in my power to help. 3. He's a man of great intellectual powers. 4. The boxer was sorry for having underestimated the power of his competitor's blows. 5. The device operates on electrical power. 6. Are the powers of the President defined by law? 7. Is the press a great power in your country? 8. What is the third power of this number? 9. They employed a high power telescope. 10. The Great Powers have agreed to co-operate on this matter.

Rough

1. The cloth is unfortunately very rough to the touch. 2. He had to apologize for his rough behaviour. 3. The sea was rough and no swimming allowed. 4. This suitcase must have had some rough handling. 5. She has a very rough tongue. 6. That is a rough translation, it requires stylistic improvement. 7. I’ve seen his new statue only in the rough. 8. He was set on by a gang of roughs who knocked him down and took all his money.

Shade

1. The summer temperature there does not exceed 20 C in the shade. 2 We have dress materials in several shades of blue. 3. The word has many shades of meaning. 4. She is a shade better today. 5. Yon are so clever and brilliant that my poor efforts are put into the shade.

Date

1. The date of his birth is 15 November, 1975. 2. 1492 is the date of the discovery of America by Columbus. 3. What's the date today? 4. Has the date for the meeting been fixed? 5. Many ruins of Roman date are to be seen in the south of France. 6. Will jeans ever go out of date? 7. I’ve got a date with a friend of mine. 8. The method applied is up-to-date.

Know

1. I don’t know whether he is here or not. 2. He knows a lot of English. 3. Do you know how to play chess? 4. I was introduced to Miss Wood last week, but I’ve a bad memory for faces and might not know her again. 5. He’s already known to the police. 6. They are twins and it’s almost impossible to know one from the other. 7. He knew poverty in his early life. 8. She knows a good singing voice when she hears one. 9. I knew about it last week.

See

Smart

Table

1. I placed his drink on the small table at his elbow. 2. I’d like a table for two at about 8.30, please. 3. Other research supports the figures in Table 3.3. 4. He didn’t know his eleven-times table. 5. It means that all the options are at least on the table. 6. The only question is whether the President can use his extraordinary political kills to turn the table on his opponents.

Challenge

1. The new government’s first challenge is economy. 2. They rose to the challenge of entertaining 80 schoolchildren for an afternoon. 3. The demonstrators have now made a direct challenge to the authority of the government. 4. Democratic leaders have challenged the President to sign the bill. 5.
