Употребление Present Continuous:

1) Для выражения длительного действия, совершающегося в момент речи.

Например: He is reading a book. – Он читает книгу (прямо сейчас, в данный момент).

В таких случаях используются следующие обстоятельства времени: now – сейчас, at this moment – в данный момент, still (+)– ещё, всё ещё, yet(-) – ещё, всё ещё. Но наличие этих слов не обязательно, поскольку сама форма выражает, что действие совершается в момент речи.

2) Для выражения длительного действия, совершающегося в настоящий период времени, хотя и не обязательно в момент речи.

Например: He is writing a new play. – Он пишет новую пьесу.

В этих случаях возможно использование таки обстоятельств как: today – сегодня, this week – на этой неделе, this evening - этим вечером и т.д.

3) Для выражения будущего длительного действия (вместо Future Continuous) в обстоятельственных придаточных предложениях времени и условия, которые вводятся союзами if – если, when – когда, while – пока и т.д.

Например: I shall be reading a newspaper while you are writing your grammar exercises. – Я буду читать газету, пока ты будешь выполнять свои упражнения по грамматике.

4) Для обозначения будущего действия, когда выражается намерение совершить действие или уверенность в его совершении.

Например: They are going to the theatre tonight. – Они идут в театр сегодня вечером.

В данном случае может быть также использована конструкция to be going to – собираться, намереваться.

Например: I am going to learn French next year. – Я собираюсь изучать французский в следующем году.

Употребление Past Continuous:

1) Для выражения длительного действия, начавшегося до определённого момента в прошлом и всё ещё совершавшегося в этот момент. Этот момент может быть определён такими обозначениями времени, как at 5 p.m. yesterday – в 5 вечера вчера, at that moment – в тот момент, at midnight – в полночь. Также этот момент может быть выражен другим прошедшим действием.

Например: He was watching TV when I entered the room. – Он смотрел телевизор, когда я вошла в комнату.

2) Для выражения длительного действия, которое совершалось в истекшем отрезке времени, хотя и не происходило непрерывно в течение всего этого отрезка.

Например: He was writing a play during the summer. – Он писал пьесу летом.

3) Наряду с Past Indefinite с такими обозначениями времени, как all day long – весь день, all the time – всё время, the whole evening – целый вечер, from 5 till 8 – с 5 до 8.

Например: I was reading all day long yesterday. – Я читал вчера весь день.

4) Для выражения двух одновременных действий в прошлом (при этом оба действия выражаются при помощи Past Continuous).

Например: While I was doing my homework, he was reading. – Пока я делал домашнее задание, он читал.

Употребление Future Continuous:

1) Для выражения длительного действия, которое начнётся до определённого момента в будущем и всё ещё будет совершаться в этот момент. Этот момент может быть определён такими обозначениями времени, как at 5 p.m. tomorrow – в 5 вечера завтра, at that moment – в этот момент, at midnight – в полночь. Также этот момент может быть выражен другим будущим действием.

Например: I shall be working when he returns. – Я буду работать, когда он вернётся.

2) Для выражения длительного действия, которое будет совершаться в определённом отрезке времени в будущем, хотя и не будет происходить непрерывно в течение всего этого отрезка.

Например: He will be writing a play during the summer. – Он будет писать пьесу летом.

3) Наряду с Future Indefinite с такими обозначениями времени, как all day long – весь день, all the time – всё время, the whole evening – целый вечер, from 5 till 8 – с 5 до 8.

Например: I shall be reading all day long tomorrow. – Я буду читать завтра весь день.

4) Для выражения двух одновременных действий в будущем (при этом в главном предложении используется Future Continuous, а в придаточном предложении – Present Continuous).

Например: While I am doing my homework, he will be reading. – Пока я делал домашнее задание, он читал.
