Aspirin is one of the safest and most effective drugs ever invented. Many people take aspirin when they have a headache. It is effective in relieving other pains, too. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th century wonder drug. But it is also the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.

Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the I9th century, there was a lot of experimentation in Europe with this chemical and it led to the development of aspirin. By 1915, aspirin tablets were available in the United States.

A small quantity of aspirin can relieve minor pain. It also reduces fever by intefering with some of the body's reactions. Basically, aspirin seems to slow down the formation of chemicals that cause pain and the complex chemical reactions that cause fever.

Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomachs. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.

After inventing dynamite Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace.

Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first awards ceremony. Nobels original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest of this sum is used for the awards which vary from $30,0000 to $125,000.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobels death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges dicisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prices. 1. On December 27, 1991, a Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) flight bound for Warsaw, Poland, with a stop in Copenhagen, Denmark, left Stockholm, Sweden, with 129 people aboard. Unfortunately, the plane did not reach either

destination.

2. Just moments after the plane had taken off, the pilot, Captain Stefan Rasmussen, reported engine trouble. At an altitude of 2,000 feet the plane had lost power in both engines. As the plane was going down, the pilot tried to find a suitable landing site. He flew through the tops of some trees to slow down the plane. Just a minute before the final crash, the plane was traveling at about 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour).

3. The plane crashed in an icy field. Because of all the ice and snow in the field, the plane slid for about 100 yards (90 meters). The plane broke into three sections. Although the fuel tanks were almost full, there was no fire.

4. Amazingly, no one died. Most of the 122 passengers and 7 crew members walked away unaided. Many of them got out of the plane through the gaps between the three pieces. About 40 people were injured, 7 of them seriously. Captain Rasmussen had head and neck injuries.
