The article deals with the need to devise a new comprehensive approach to teaching Russian as the mother tongue to intercultural communication students, which is different from approaches used in training linguists, journalists, teachers and others. Aspiring translators are supposed to have a good command of the style they deal with when translating a text; moreover, they are to be able to switch freely between registers and to monitor their own speech both in Russian and in another language. Considering the fact that nowadays the prevalent speech register is neutral or even colloquial as well as that newly admitted T&I students linguistic and educational background is often limited, teachers are to overhaul their methods and to take up comprehensive teaching systems with their individual approach to every student and innovations in language didactics. In T&I training it is necessary to encourage students to aspire to elite language personality and to build up independent work skills.
