The University of Sheffield The University of Sheffield grew out of three older institutions: the Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), First College (founded in 1879 as a result of the University Extenuation movement) and the Sheffield Technical School (opened in 1886). These three institutions were amalgamated in 1897 to form University College, Sheffield. It was then decided to combine the First College with the Medical School into a single building which was constructed at Western Bank and at the same time to enlarge facilities at the previous site at St Georges Square. On 31st May 1905 the University of Sheffield received its charter. There has always been a very close liaison between the city and the University. Its main buildings are not more than three-quarters of a mile from the Town Hall.     Although the University houses nine Faculties and some seventy Departments, the study of the applications of science has always been a special feature. The Faculties include Arts, Pure Science, Medicine (including a School of Dental Studies), Law, Engineering Materials, Social Sciences, Architectural Studies and Educational Studies. There is also an exceptionally progressive Department of Extramural Studies which continues its influence, like the Institute of Education, throughout the Sheffield region. The University has a well-equipped Language Center and Laboratory and a television Service with two studios and a mobile unit. : ( 1828 ), ( 1879 ) ( 1886 ). 1897 . , - --. 31 1905 . . . , . , , ( ), , , , . , . , .
