Free time
1 Do you like solving crossword puzzles? Why / Why not?
2 Read and translate this text about Maxims hobby.
I like doing different things, such as reading detective novels, listening to music, playing tennis with my friends, travelling.
But my favourite way to spend free time is doing crossword puzzles. It's not only interesting, but also useful. When you try to solve a puzzle, you find out and learn a lot of different facts. Besides, in puzzles there are questions about famous people, geographical places, countries, scientific achievements and so on. They also train your brain. I can spend hours doing crosswords and Im never fed up!
Crossword puzzles first appeared in the US in the early 20th century. Today many people around the world regularly do crosswords, sometimes on the bus or train on their way to work. And so does my dad! Most newspapers and magazines contain at least one crossword and there are often prizes for people who send in the correct solution. (Once I even won a mixer!) Books of crosswords are also popular.
I know that in Britain they have two basic types of crossword: quick and cryptic. In quick crosswords the clues are usually definitions of the answers. Cryptic crosswords, which began in Britain and are much more popular there than in any other country, have clues which contain both a definition of the answer and a word puzzle involving the letters in it.
I like doing all types of crossword puzzles. They are Scandinavian, English, Hungarian, Japanese, ordinary. I sometimes try to make up my own puzzle and I can say that it isnt as easy as it seems to be!
As I said earlier my dad likes solving puzzles too, and this unites us very much.
