Формы Progressiveиспользуются, когда вы хотите представить действие в развитии, т.е. между началом и концом. Look, they are leaving. The kids areplaying on the lawn.

 

Действие, обозначенное формой Progressive, не обязательно является длительным. He was switching on the light when I saw him. На то, чтобы включить свет, уходит секунда, а выбранная форма показывает, что вы как раз наблюдали действие в этот момент.

 

В действительности описываемое действие может занимать разные промежутки времени. 1. I’m thinking about something else right now. (в момент речи) 2. We’re just beginning to study progressive forms. (2-3 дня) 3. We’re studying tense forms now. (более длительный период) Во всех – действие уже начато, но ещене закончено.

 

Иногда форма Progressive используется, чтобы подчеркнуть кажущуюсянепрерывность действия. I was washing up all the day! You’re always complaining!

Глаголы (feel, see, hear, think, consider, understand, realize, etc) имеют и другие значения, которые допускают Progressive. I’m feeling my way. (ищу на ощупь) He was seeing her that evening. (встречать) The doctor said she was seeing things. (видеть галлюцинации)

 

Глаголы-связки (be, remain, look, taste, make, etc.) обычно не имеют форму Progressive, за исключениемглаголов, обозначающих смену состояния. I’m growing cold only because it’s really getting cold.
