This article presents the results about soil cover of the river Dons floodplain near the Starocherkasskaya village. The soil cover of the Don-Aksay floodplain is a polygenetic system with complex spatial organization and varied composition. The predominant type of soil is alluvial-meadow soils with different features of soil profiles changing with depth and level of salinity. The evolution of alluvial meadow soils deal with the process of steppization. It is a result of changes of water regime in Don-Aksay floodplain due to the building of the

Tsimlyansk reservoir and construction a protective embankment near the Starocherkasskaya village. The process of slitization has a significant influence into the chernozem-meadow soils and alluvial meadow soils of the floodplain. It is caused by the pulsation of the hydrothermal regime, accompanied by changes in morphology and physical properties of the soils. The reasons of these processes are described.
