Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves
Once upon a time there lived Ali Baba in a land called Persia. He was a poor man a lived in a little house with his wife. Every day he went out and collected wood. He carried the wood on three donkeys. One day Ali Baba went with his donkeys to collect some wood. Suddenly he heard a sound of horses neighing. He climbed a tree and hid. Then he saw forty men riding towards him. They stopped near the tree and took some bags off their horses. The bags were very heavy because they were full of gold. The men were thieves. They went up to a rock, and the captain said, Open Sesame! Sesame was a magic word. A door opened in the rock. All the thieves carried their bags through the door and into the cave. Then the door shut. Ali Baba waited for a long time. At last the thieves came out of the cave. They had no bags. The captain said, Shut Sesame! and the door in the rock shut. Then the thieves got on their horses and rode away. Ali Baba climbed down the tree and went to the rock.
He said, Open Sesame! The door opened, and Ali Baba saw a cave full of gold and jewels. Ali Baba was astonished. He fetched his donkeys and filled their bags with gold. He put wood on top of the gold to hide it. Then he said, Shut Sesame! The door shut, and Ali Baba went home. He showed all the gold to his wife. Ali Baba had a brother called Cassim. Cassim was rich and greedy. His wife was rich and greedy too. Ali Babas wife went to Cassims house. Please may I borrow your scales? she asked. Yes. replied Cassims wife. She wanted to know why Ali Baba needed the scales. So she put some fat on them to make them sticky. Ali Babas wife took the scales home. She did not know that there was fat on them. Ali Babas wife weighed all the gold, and Ali Baba dug a hole in the garden and buried it. Now we are very h he said. A piece of gold stuck to the fat on the scales, but Ali Babas wife didnt see it. She took back the scales to Cassims house. Cassims wife saw the piece of gold. Look. she said to Cassim. Where does this come from? Cassim went to Ali Babas house, and asked Ali Baba about the gold. Ali Baba told him about the cave and the thieves. Ill go and fetch some gold. said Cassim. The next morning Cassim took ten donkeys and put big chests on their backs. Then he went to the cave. He cried: Open Sesame! and the door opened. Cassim went in, and the door shut. He put a lot of gold by the door. Then he cried, Open Barley!
The door didnt open because it was wrong word. Cassim had forgotten the magic word. He could not get out of the cave. Later the thieves came back, and they saw Cassims donkeys. Whos stealing our gold? they cried. Then they went to the cave. The captain opened the door, and they all saw Cassim. They were very angry, and they killed him. That night Ali Baba went to look for his brother. He opened the door of the cave and found Cassim was dead. Ali Baba was sad. He put Cassim in a bag and took him home on his donkey. In the morning he buried Cassim. That day the thieves went back to the cave. Where is the dead man? they cried. They were frightened. They all cried, Who took away the dead man? Who knows our magic word? We must find that man and kill him. One thief said, Ill go and find his house. The thief went to town. Was anybody buried yesterday? Yes. Cassim was. Ali Baba lives now here in his
house. The thief went to the house and made a cross with white chalk on the door.
|
|
Now well know which is the right house. he thought. Very soon Ali Babas wife came home from the market. She saw the white cross on the door.
What is that for? she thought. Perhaps somebody wants to hurt Ali Baba. She found a piece of white chalk, and made crosses on the doors of many house.
That night all the thieves came to town. They looked for the house with the white cross on the door. They looked at a lot of houses, and they found one with a white cross. This is the right house. said the thieves. Then they saw another house with a white cross on the door. They saw a lot of houses with white crosses on the doors. Which is the right one? they asked. They had to go home because they did not know which was Ali Babas house. They were very angry. The next day the captain of the thieves said, Ill go and look for Ali Babas house. He went to town and found AH Babas house. He looked at it very carefully. Ill remember that house. he said. Then he went back to the other thieves. Fetch some oil jars and some donkeys. said the captain.
The thieves fetched forty oil jars and twenty donkeys. They put oil in one jar. A thief climbed into each of the other jars. Stay there. said the captain, until I tell you to come. The donkeys carried the jars to town. The captain took the donkeys to Ali Babas house.
Please may I stay here for one night?
Yes, of course
May we put the oil jars outside the back door?
Of course. Would you like some supper?
Yes. I see there is no oil at home!
Do you have some?
Yes, tell your wife to go outside and take some oil
She went to the first jar and lifted the lid. But there was no oil in the jar. There was a thief in it.
Can I come out?
No.
Can I come out?
She went to thirty-nine jars, and they all had a thief inside. In the last jar there was some oil. Whatll I do? I have an idea. She took some oil for the lamp. Then she filled a big kettle with oil, and put the kettle on the fire. When the oil was very hot, she took the kettle and poured some hot oil into the first jar. It killed the thief. Ali Babas wife poured hot oil into the second jar. The hot oil killed the second thief. So she killed all the thieves. The captain didnt know anything about his men. In the middle of the night the captain went to the oil jars to kill Ali Baba. But no one came out. The captain was frightened and ran away.
When Ali Baba knew about it, he was happy to have a clever wife.

Household Chores
My family consists of four members: my mother, my father, my little brother and me. Each member of the family has his own chores. My father goes shopping. He buys bread, milk, vegetables, fruits, eggs and other products. My mother prepares dinner and supper. We like Mothers cooking. She is especially good at cooking fried fish.
My chore is to wash up dishes. I also have to dust the furniture and to sweep the floor in my room every day. My younger brothers chores are to carry: lo carry out the garbage and to put his things in their right places.
On Saturday all the family are busy with their chores. We make our flat neat. My father cleans the carpets wish a vacuum cleaner. My mother washes linen in a washing machine. I wash the floor. My brother cleans shoes. After all that we lay the table and have dinner. Then we have tea with wonderful cakes made by my mother. We thank our parents and father cheerfully says: Business before pleasure. We enjoy the rest of the day doing things we like to do.
Chores are very important in the life of the family. Our family is very friendly because everybody treats his chores very seriously.
