Ex. 22.2. Translate a scrap of dialogue below about detecting contraband into Russian, sentence by sentence:

1. What are the channels through which smuggled goods enter the country? 1. Smuggled goods can enter the country together with passengers, cargo or with a means of conveyance.
2. What articles are considered smuggled? 2. Articles such as currency, bonds, jewelleries, precious metals and stones, antiques, explosives, drugs, weapons, firearms and ammunition, if they are brought into the country without a special permit.
3. What actions are regarded as smuggling? 3. The unlawful bringing in or taking out of the country of forbidden or restricted articles is considered contraband. When such articles are declared but the value and the number of articles is stated false, such actions are also considered illegal.
4. What counterfeit goods are often smuggled into Russia? 4. Fakes of popular brands of perfume, CDs and medicines.
5. In what cases can a personal search be made? 5. Customs officer can search a person if he has a reason to believe that the person is carrying about himself objects liable to confiscation.
6. How is the search carried out? 6. The search can be made only with a permit of the Customs Office Chief and carried out in the presence of two witnesses.
7. What document is to be made as a result of the search? 7. A list of all things seized is to be made.
8. In what ways are people punished for smuggling? 8. A person who is found guilty of smuggling may be punished by a fine or taken to court. Smuggled articles are confiscated.
9. Why may people of different social standing be engaged in smuggling? 9. People of different social standing smuggle because they don't want to pay Customs duties and hope to make a bit of money in this way.
