What Every Special Education Teacher Should Know

TEXT I B

After placement, the special education teacher may conduct a curriculum-based assessment or use teaching probes to gather further information about the childs unique learning needs. The teacher may maintain a daily chart of the childs academic performance and also maintain a record of self-management skills.

The list also includes tests, rating scales and checklists, and charts and records concerning each child with exceptionalities.

The problem with a collection of such information is the natural confect between the individuals right to privacy and societys need for information concerning individual behavior.

To protect the privacy of students and their families and at the same time to ensure access to information for people with a legitimate interest in a childs education, Congress enacted the Family Educational Rights and Privacy act (FERPA) in 1974.
