The Past Perfect is used:

1) to denote an action completed before a certain moment in the past. The moment may be indicated by another past action expressed by a verb in the Past Simple or an adverbial phrase.

The definite moment can be understood by the situation.

2) to denote an action which began before a definite moment in the past, continued up to that moment and was still going on at that moment. In this case either the starting point is indicated (the conjunction since is used) or the whole period of duration (the preposition for is used). The Past Perfect is often used instead of Past Perfect Continuous with the verbs which are not used in the continuous aspect.

They hadnt spoken to each other for three days.

3) to denote the completion of an action (not necessarily the priority).

4) in written speech with the conjunctions hardly when, scarcely when, no sooner than.
