Aims, Objectives and Purposes Aims

In the literature on language teaching, you may find these terms are used interchangeably. To avoid confusion, however, on the course we should use these terms in the same way:

Aim: Long-term - can refer to: -

(a) whole course, e.g. Ls will develop the skills needed to perform a variety of speaking tasks of the kind commonly encountered in everyday social and professional life.

(b) series of lessons (unit of work), e.g. Ls will be able to cope with authentic written texts by employing the strategies of using co-text and context in the comprehension process.

Objectives: For lessons (=steps to achieve aim): -

Main objectives best formulated in terms of learner performance objectives or learning of the outcomes (rather than teaching objectives) e.g. by the end lesson, Ls...

- will be able to...

- will be (more) aware of...

- will have (further) developed their ability to...

awareness of...

- will have revised...

These objectives can reflect areas of knowledge/skill/attitude and behaviour.

Main Objectives: The main objective should be detailed, i.e. include mention of specific sub-skills, if involved, e.g. Ls will be (better) able to cope with authentic news broadcasts by practising the listening skills of (x, y, z). The major portion of time in the lesson should be allocated to the main objective.

A teaching objective is an objective from the T's point of view that focuses on T's performance (i.e. teaching language items and skills).

A learning objective is an objective from the L's point of view that focuses on Ss' performance (i.e. what they will be able to do with the language item or skill in a communicative situation).

Secondary Objectives: These may have a large role in the lesson but are not the main objective, e.g. Ls will develop their discussion skills.

Purposes: These are objectives for each stage in the lesson and should be included in the lesson plan under the Purposes column, e.g. a beginning activity - to prepare Ls psychologically for learning; -to activate Ls background knowledge of topic.

Beginning of the lesson Warming up Consists of traditional greeting, checking up the readiness of the group to begin the lesson (class).   May include warmers, icebreakers, freshers, coolers - to involve learners in to the English language atmosphere of the lesson, to help them to adapt to the conditions of the room, subject, group.  
2. Review Here it is possible to practise (train) the material given at the previous lesson, to check up home tasks
3. [Presentation] New material is presented.  
4. Practice Practising training ofthe presented material: Ø controlled by the teacher; Ø guided by the teacher; Ø free practice.  
5. Production Practising new material presented upper in using it in independent speaking or writing. , ,
6. [Revision] It's a brief revision of the new material -given at this lesson to be sure it is understood by learners.
7. Home assignment
