Use of the future continuous




1. We use the future continuous for an action that will be going on at a definite moment in the future.

Ill be still working at 5. .

2. We use the future continuous for an action that will be going on for a period of time in the future.

Shell be studying from 7 to 9 tomorrow. .

John says will be working in the garden from 6 to 8. , .

3. We use the future continuous for parallel actions in the future. (We use the present continuous in adverbial clauses of time.)

Youll be cooking while Im reading. , .

Ill be planting the trees while you are burning the leaves tomorrow. , .

4. We use the future continuous for future routine events.

Well be having our weekly meeting tomorrow so Ill present your proposal then. . (The focus is on the routine nature of the weekly meeting.)

Dont come to my place tomorrow. Ill be cleaning my flat. . .

Were having our weekly meeting tomorrow instead of Friday this week. . (The present continuous focuses on the current arrangement.)

5. We use the future continuous instead of the present continuous or begoing to when we want to emphasise plans, arrangements and intentions.

THE FUTURE PERFECT

Formation

We make the future perfect by using will have and past participle.

Example: I will have finished the whole job by then.

They will have left by the time you arrive.

Questions are made by putting will before the subject.

Example: How much will you have done by this afternoon?

Will he have left by now?

Negatives are made by putting not after the auxiliary will.

Example: I still wont have finished work by then.

They wont have arrived by then.

 

Affirmative I will have done you will have done he/she/it will have done we will have done you will have done they will have done Questions Will I have done? Will you have done? Will he/she/it have done? Will we have done? Will you have done? Will they have done? Negative I will not have done you will not have done he/she/it will not have done we will not have done you will not have done they will not have done

Passive forms

The future perfect passive has the following structure:

will + have + been + past participle

Active: He will have read this book by Friday.

Passive: By Friday this book will have been read by him.

Active: Well have spent all the money by next year.

Passive: By next year all the money will have been spent.

Use of the future perfect

1. We use the future perfect to say that something will be ended, completed, or achieved before a particular time in the future.

He will have destroyed the book before his parents arrive. , , .

She will have come by the time you return. .

NB

The verb to be isnt used in the future perfect.

By the time you come, I will be ready. , , .

By the time you come, the meeting will be over. , , .

2. We use the future perfect to describe an action or a state that will have lasted for a period of time before a particular time in the future.
