Mercy is main moral value. Love to the ones neighbour, care of aged, ill and old in Christianity is one of evangelical command-ments, basis of upbringing and philanthropy of the per-son. In the middle of the cen-tury, the Christian mercy and philanthropy got from spiritual ritter orders.
In the 14-th century were organized religious associations of women who dedicated their life to care of the sick people. In 1617 was founded Society of Mercy.
In the middle of 17-th century were founded such societies in France, Italy, Spain etc. In Russia, such societies were founded in 1763 according with the decree of Ekaterina II. In these societies were accepted girls, young women, widows aged 20-40 years old. Russian sisters of mercy took part in helping the population, victims from natural disasters. For it, they were conferred orders and medals. These sisters of mercy were taught different methods to care of wounded and sick, the bases of pharmacology and medical terminology.
The new educational program in preparing of sisters of mercy was confirmed in Russia in 1872. The main principle of this program was the teaching at the bed of sick patient. There were two types of schools:
1. Communities of sisters of mercy;
2. Schools of Red Cross.
After the revolution, they were reorganized into city or town clinics. The Soviet Government abolished in 1927 the term sister of mercy and introduced the term nurse, specialization nursering business. In 1996 was introduced in Russia State educational standard of secondary professional education.
