1 Study this vocabulary and definitions and think of Russian equivalents:

designer - a person whose job is to decide how clothes will look by making drawings

founder - a person who starts an organization

to produce - to make things to be sold, especially in large quantities

       Lorella Braglia is a designer. She lives in the North of Italy, in Reggio Emilia, which is between Milan and Bologna. She has her own company - Dielle. In fact, she is the founder of Dielle. The company produces knitwear - clothes, which sell all over the world.

       Lorella designs two collections every year, and presents them at fashion shows in London, Paris, and New York. Dielle makes everything in Italy, and uses very modern equipment in its workshops. The company employs the services of 70 workshops in and around Reggio Emilia. It produces 100,000 units per year.

       Lorella’s husband, Danilo, works for the company as Marketing Director. They live in a house in the centre of Reggio Emilia, not far from the office. They are not often there, because they both travel a lot. How do they relax? ‘I do yoga and Danilo plays golf,’ says Lorella. At the weekends they play golf together and eat out at local restaurants with their children. (Business Basics, SB)

       Jeffrey Immelt is Chairman and CEO of General Electrics Co. GE is a 128-year-old company in Connecticut, USA. It operates in more than 100 countries and employs more than 320,000 people worldwide.

       Immelt is 51 and is a very rich man. He is married, and his wife’s name is Andrea. They have one daughter. Her name is Sarah, she is 20 years old. ‘My wife and my daughter are great,’ Immelt says. ‘It’s a pity we’re not together more often.’ He is away on business more than 50% of his time, and he tries to meet customers about a week a month. ‘Life is never boring’, he says. ‘No two days are the same’.

       He usually gets up at 5.30 in the morning and works out for about an hour. ‘Exercise is important, but my real hobby is golf,’ he says. ‘I’m not great at golf, but I enjoy it. And I like to read, especially when I’m on the move.’ He likes biographies, business books and fiction, and reads about 50 books a year. He also likes 1970s rock music. (Market Leader, SB)

GRAMMAR  FOCUS 2 – Present Simple

 

i When we talk about regular actions and permanent states we use the present simple tense.

I work for Dielle. You live in London. We speak English and French. They travel a lot.

 

ii We add s to the end of the verb in the third person singular (he, she, it).

He plays golf. She works at home. It takes two hours to get to work. She knows a lot about computers.

iii To make questions and negative sentences we use the auxiliary do / does.

Where do you live? When do they finish work? Do you live here? Do you speak English? I live in Paris. I don’t (=do not) live in Milan. They finish work at 12.00. They don’t work in the afternoon. No, I don’t. Yes, I do.

 

iv We use does for the third person (he, she, it)      

What languages does she speak? Does he smoke? Does he work with them? She speaks German and English. She doesn’t (does not) speak Spanish. Yes, he does. No, she doesn’t.

       There are three different ways of saying the time:
