We are starting our city tour with Tverskaya Street which is justly considered the main street of Moscow. It is known from the 14th century. Its present day look took shape in the 1930-50s when according to General Reconstruction Plan of the Soviet Government it was straightened and widened. A lot of massive imposing buildings of the style, which is nowadays known as Stalin architecture, appeared on the street.
Everything that was best and new Moscow started in Tverskaya. It was the first street lit with electric lamps. The first trams ran in Tverskaya. It is the street of luxurious boutiques and beauty shops, large and small souvenir and gift shops, fine dining restaurants and confectionaries, fashionable hotels and prosperous banks.
The street is called Tverskaya because it has been the road from Moscow to the town of Tver since old times. The modern street is about 2.5 kilometres long.
