CN investing US$165 million to expand Kirk Yard

Canadian National has plans for a US$165-million expansion of its Kirk Yard in Gary, Ind., and relocation of its Chicago area locomotive repair shop to the upgraded freight car classification facility in Northwest Indiana.
The project will increase Kirk Yard's processing capacity to 2,500 cars per day from its current 1,500. Additional classification tracks, along with more receiving and departure tracks will allow the yard to handle longer and more efficient trains, improve interchange with other railroads and consolidate CN's switching operations in the Chicago area at a single primary yard.
"Our Kirk Yard improvements, to be completed over the next four years, will deliver significant gains in productivity and create new capacity for growth in the Chicago area," said Jim Vena, CN senior vice-president, southern region. "Additionally, the redesign of Kirk Yard represents a significant investment by CN in Northwest Indiana which will bring approximately 250 new jobs to Gary."
CN's locomotive repair work now performed at a shop in Homewood, Ill., south of Chicago will be gradually moved to a new 155,000-square foot shop facility in Kirk Yard. The facility will be capable of servicing CN's fleet of locomotives operating across its U.S. network.
A new wastewater treatment facility, upgrades to utilities throughout the yard and the renovation of several yard buildings will also be part of the Kirk Yard redevelopment.
CN has partnered with the State of Indiana, its Regional Development Authority and the City of Gary on an economic development incentive package to assist the Kirk Yard development. The incentives are provided through city of Gary tax increment financing, a Regional Development Authority grant and grants and tax credits from the state of Indiana for job creation.
"Whether its bringing dollars back from overseas or from right next door, finding new investments and jobs is always job one for us," said Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. "Today, we see a product of that effort as one of the leaders of the rail industry chooses Indiana's lower-cost, business-friendly climate and best of all, chooses Northwest Indiana for its new expansion."
CN acquired the 350-acre yard as part of its purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway in 2009. The relocation of the locomotive repair shop to Kirk Yard will free space in CN's Markham Yard for redevelopment adjacent to CN's Chicago Intermodal Terminal. (2057 symbols)

Regional economies boosted by £5bn Great Western Rail investment
A £5bn investment programme to provide more seats and shorter journey times on the Great Western rail route will provide a massive boost to the economies of the south west of England and the Thames Valley, Network Rail has announced today.

Over the next 30 years it is forecast that the benefits to the regions economies owing to the improvement programme will be at least double the £5bn being invested. It will also potentially bring new rail journey opportunities for key urban centres, including Reading, Oxford, Swindon, Bath and Bristol, boosting these economies by an additional £200m.
The ten-year improvement plan the largest revamp of the Great Western railway since it was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel 175 years ago was unveiled today by transport secretary Philip Hammond and Network Rail chief executive David Higgins.
Speaking at the launch event at London Paddington station, David Higgins said the investment would turn the Great Western into the most advanced intercity railway in Britain and would help drive economic growth across the region.
Electrification, resignalling and new trains will improve journeys and provide the extra capacity needed to cater for a predicted 51% increase in passengers travelling on the route over the next 30 years.
David Higgins, chief executive of Network Rail, said: Today sees the start of an unprecedented period of investment in the Great Western. The planned improvements will provide a bigger and better railway for passengers, help support and drive economic growth and allow our regions to thrive. By the end of the decade, the Great Western main line will be the most advanced intercity railway in Britain, setting the standard for twenty-first century rail and providing the capacity we need to cater for the continued increase in the popularity of rail travel.
Mark Hopwood, director, First Great Western, said: In the past 10 years we have seen marked journey growth in the area First Great Western serves, with over 40% growth. The combination of improved reliability, better connectivity and competitiveness of rail against other modes is increasingly attracting customers to use the railway.
David Rosser, director, CBI South West, said: A modern and efficient railway is a critical part of the infrastructure needed to support business in the 21st century. For Wales and the South West, linkages to London and the international transport networks will be a fundamental component of regional competitiveness, so this programme of investment is very good news.
A recent survey of more than 800 passengers and businesses found that having more seats on trains was by far the most desired improvement, followed by improved punctuality and shorter journey times. (2300 symbols)
