Behavioral activation and inhibition as a cause of Individual Differences

G. G. Knyazev*, H. R. Slobodskaya**, A. N. Savost'yanov***, T. I. Ryabichenko****, O. A. Shushlebina*****, E. A. Levin******

Gray's theory explains variability of human behavior and emotional reactions due to neuropsychological systems - behavioral activation and behavioral inhibition. The sensitivity of the named systems is considered to be the fundament of individual differences presented in Eysenck's super factors. Gray - Wilson and Carver - White's questionnaires were called to measure the sensitivity of activation and inhibition systems. The factor structure of Russian adaptations of Gray - Wilson and Carver - White's questionnaires were analyzed in samples consisted of Ss of different age and gender using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The predictive power of behavioral activation and inhibition scales was defined related to Eysenck's super factors. Gray - Wilson and Carver - White's scales explained 43% of Neuroticism, 32% of Psychoticism and 19% of Extraversion variability. For Neuroticism and Extraversion these proportions differed significantly in males and females. The conclusion was made that in females Extraversion depends more on social factors whereas Neuroticism depends more on biological predisposition.

Key words: behavioral inhibition, behavioral activation, Extraversion, Neuroticism, Psychoticism, confirmatory factor analysis.
