Attention getter: Have you ever heard Summertime by George Gershvin, one of the most famous songs in the world? Do you know that writing it he was inspired by Ukrainian lullaby Oi, hodyt son kolo vikon, which he heard in 1929 in New York during performance of Ukrainian National Chorus?

Preview: Ukrainians is a musical nation, so its history is closely connected with music in all its appearances, so traditional music culture is many-sided.

Thesis: Ukrainian music has rich roots, but Ukrainians forget about them

Credibility: As a person, who is a great fan of music and who wants to improve situation in modern Ukrainian music, I want to go deeper in this question.

A. Roots and peculiarities of Ukrainian traditional music

Vocal peculiarities of folk music

Ukrainian folk songs originate from ancient ritual songs. Folk of Dnieper Ukraine (Naddnipryanshchyna) is characterized by melodic ornamentation, vocalization of vowels. Songs of Prykarpattya are characterized by intonation approximated to natural mode, descending glissando at the end of phrases, words with exclamations, melodic improvisations, and syllabic recitative.

Modes of folk music

Speaking about modes, it should be mentioned, that such modes as Aeolian, Ionian, Dorian and Mixolydian are peculiar to Ukraininan music, gutsul folk have their own mode, which is called Gutsul mode.

Instrumental folk music

Musical instruments are rich in Ukrainian music and include wide range of brass, string and percussive tools. So, the oldest layer is connected with calendar holydays and rites, which are accompanied by marches, dancing music and instrumental songs. Traditional instrumental ensembles consisted of violin, pipe and tambourine. During prayers people usually used the wheel lyra, kobza and bandura. In times of Zaporizska Sich, kettledrums, drums, trumpets usually played in orchestras. By the way, kettle drums were a part of ensigns of Sich, thus being one of the symbols of Ukrainian statehood. In urban culture psaltery, zither, etc. were also widespread.
